With another year over, it’s time once again for the Social Media Awards—when we examine the bigger picture and analyze social media data throughout 2019.  These are the most successful grocery store brands in Germany over the span of 12 months.

To determine the most successful grocery store brands as well as the year’s top posts, we consider all categories including articles, pictures and videos. Total interactions are measured across the platforms of Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

2019’s most successful Grocery Stores in Germany:

German Startups Ranking

Kaufland emerged victorious in 2019, earning more social media interactions throughout the year (+4 million) than all other competitors in the Grocery Store Ranking. EDEKA ranked 2nd place with 3.6 million total interactions, followed by Lidl Deutschland who achieved more than 2.7 million total interactions in 3rd place.

#1: Kaufland

Kaufland has 166 thousand followers on Instagram, over 1.3 million fans on Facebook, 4.680 followers on Twitter and 22.1 thousand subscribers on YouTube. Most of their social media engagement happened on Instagram, with more than 2.5 million interactions gained in 2019.


EDEKA has a total of more than 1.2 million Facebook fans, 159 thousand followers on Instagram, and over 152 thousand subscribers on YouTube. Instagram is their best social platform, earning over 2 million IG interactions compared to their next-best platform: Facebook – 1.3 million.

#3: Lidl Deutschland

A total of more than 2.6 million Facebook fans follow Lidl DE, as well as 407 thousand Instagram followers, 45.1 thousand Twitter followers and 37.9 thousand YouTube subscribers. Contrary to most brands, Facebook is their top-performing social media platform—Lidl earned almost 1.7 million FB interactions in 2019.
